Most major projects hosted elsewhere have GitHub mirrors. Blender's mirror has 14.7k stars, Krita's has 8k, Gimp has 5.3, etc. The star counts of those mirrors are used. In the rare case that the project does not have a GitHub mirror, other measures will be taken to analyze product popularity.
