A definitive list of the best of everything open source
Status: Maintained - License: MIT
Note
Project is currently in the alpha stage and under heavy development. Formatting is still rough, a universal organization system has not yet been implemented, and many popular open-source projects are not yet included. Consult the roadmap for further information regarding development.
Tip
Submit or make changes by forking this repo, editing, commiting, and opening a pull-request. Please make sure you include a description of what you have updated or added. For an open source project to be approved for submission, the repo MUST have over 1k stars, and preferably over 5k stars - but this is flexible. If the app is extraordinary or does a task nothing else does, it will most likely be accepted. The app should also have relatively recent commits or something that signifies active development.
Caution
Star count last updated 10/15/2024. API retrieval system of stars currently being implemented for always up-to-date star counts.
Why another list?
There's plenty of awesome lists on GitHub, many focusing on open source specifically. However I've found them including many long-deprecated apps, cluttered with smaller projects on the verge of extinction, or missing a lot of modern open source projects.
This list aims to be highly curated including only the best open source projects. This is, to some extent, guaged with popularity. Only projects with over 5000 stars are generally included, however there can be exceptions. There's plenty of extraordinary projects with just a couple thousand stars. Guaging the quality of software based on popularity alone is not the best way, I do admit, but to keep this list functioning at scale it is the most reliable method.

Honorable Mentions of Closed-Source Software
Although a rare occurence, there are times in which proprietary software is the best option available even amongst closed-source competitors. Here are several such applications that deserve a spot on this list.
- Davinci Resolve - A full-fledged video editor with an incredibly powerful free tier.
- Obsidian - One of the most popular note taking apps / markdown editors. Often thought of to be open source, likely because the team behind the project isn't greedy.
- LM Studio - Incredibly powerful and feature rich gui for running local LLM models.
- JetBrains - A suite of incredibly powerful (and slightly bloated) IDE's.
